“I feel very lucky to have managed to labor in this crazy business for almost 62 years now,” the star, who became a household call as John-Boy on The Waltons, tells Closer Weekly, on newsstands now. “There are those of us — the child thespian survivors — who hold a certain understanding of what it takes: First as a child star, then an adolescent, a young leading actor, a leading actor and now, at my age, a supporting character actor,” says Richard, 69, who cites Ron Howard and Kurt Russell as other examples of this rare team. “For those of us who have gone through it, there is a wonderful shared experience.”

1. He Made His Broadway Debut at Age 7
Richard Thomas was just seven years old when he made his Broadway debut in Sunrise at Campobello in On Studio 10, Thomas was asked if making his Broadway debut at such a young age was slightly terryifying, to which Thomas laughed, “No, it wasn’t terrifying at all! That’s how you know you have the [acting] virus … when you can’t wait to get out there.”

Richard Thomas's comedy career began in , doing a musical act on keyboards. In , he wrote and performed a one-act opera called Tourette’s Diva with four actors, which aired at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Thomas had the idea for an opera based on Jerry Springer at this moment, and wrote it over the next two years, chiefly in workshops at Battersea Arts Centre. Thomas would offer a "Beer for an Idea", where any audience members submitting a good idea would be rewarded with a can of Foster's (and poor ideas with a supermarket store brand).
After a number of petite scale performances of the first act, which was in much the matching shape as it remains today, the second do (where the characters descend into hell) was vague and unformed. Thomas brought his friend Stewart Lee in to assist with the writing. Six months later, the op
