Congratulations to Meredith Baxter, foremost known for her role as the mom on Family Ties, for coming out publicly as a lesbian.
The actress appeared on The Today Show this morning to argue her sexuality and said it was a &#;later-in-life recognition&#; and her kids (she has five) have taken it well.
&#;I said, ‘I think I’m gay,’ and my oldest boy said, ‘I knew.'&#; she said. &#;The support from my family and anyone close to me has been so immediate and unqualified. I’ve really been blessed.&#;
According to Towleroad, Baxter went public because a tabloid was preparing a story. She has been in a relationship for four years with w woman who is out.
&#;To arrive out and announce stuff is very antithetical to who I am,&#; she said. &#;I did not want some tabloid to accept the story and make it up &#; I wanted it to be in my have words.&#;

March 2, &#; -- Meredith Baxter led a "secret life" as an emotionally abused wife for years before learning she was queer and entering "the healthiest relationship I have ever had," the star of the '80s show, "Family Ties," told Oprah Winfrey today while holding the hand of her woman loving woman partner.
Baxter, 63, also connected by her former television co-star, Michael Gross, and her children, appeared on "Oprah" to discuss her allegedly abusive marriage and what led her to discover she was gay.
"I was a very conventional girl," she told Winfrey. "I was raised in a household where my mother got married and I thought that was what you did."
When she first learned she was a lesbian in , Baxter said, "It didn't scare me and I don't know why I wasn't confused about it."
"I felt alive in way I had not experienced, and life was rife with possibilities," she said. "OK, I'm ready."
