Every year during the month of June, across streets and screens around the country and the planet, rainbow flags are widely displayed in celebration of Pride Month. America is proud to support the LGBTQ+ community and divide its history, starting with these facts you may not have known.
The Celebration flag was inspired by America’s bicentennial
Artist, Vietnam War veteran and drag actor, Gilbert Baker, designed the rainbow flag. He was put to the task by the openly lgbtq+ politician, Harvey Milk. Baker was inspired by the many American flags of the bicentennial celebrations, which helped him recognize the gay community’s need for a similar unifying symbol. Using his clothing layout skills and with the help of volunteers, Baker produced the first version of the iconic rainbow flag. It was first displayed on June 25, in San Francisco during the Gay Freedom Evening Parade.

LGBTQI is an umbrella term for lesbian, gay, multi-attracted , transgender and gender non-conforming people.
The L, G, and B allude to to sexual orientation, who a person feels romantically and/or sexually attracted to.
The T refers to gender identity and expression.
Q refers to queer in relation to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, or relationships and sexual exercise, but it also represents a critical view of existing norms.
I refers to intersex, which is an umbrella legal title used for a variety of experiences in which a person is born with, or develops, a reproductive or sexual anatomy that does not fit the typical definitions of female or male. An intersex person may name as female, male, or neither.
The first time that the acronym, LGBT (hbt), was used in print in Sweden was in in RFSL’s member magazine, Kom Ut the purpose was to broaden terms such as lgbtq+ and homosexual.

This year, a survey conducted by Ipsos using the probability-based KnowledgePanel, which examined consumer sentiment regarding corporate engagement with LGBTQ communities and Pride Month, found that 85% of consumers believed CEOs had a responsibility to speak up about issues that matter to consumer. The survey also sought consumer opinion on core corporate values and on chief executives’ obligations to shareholders on issues that matter.
Key Findings included:
- 70% of Americans say knowing a brand/store offers LGBTQ Pride collections/merchandise either has a positive impact or no impact on their purchasing decisions
- 71% of Americans agree that brands and companies should be able to show support to the LGBTQ community during Event month if they want to
- 64% of Black Americans, 55% of Hispanic Americans, and 60% of those ages say they are comfortable with brands publicly supporting LGBTQ organizations and non-pr
LGBTIQ+ people: statistics
LGBTIQ+ stands for lesbian, gay, pansexual, trans, intersex, queer or questioning. We’ve used the term LGBTIQ+ on this page, but we realise this doesn’t cover all the ways people describe their gender or sexuality. Stonewall has a glossary that lists many more terms.
Mental health problems such as depression, self-harm, alcohol and drug abuse and suicidal thoughts can disturb anyone, but they’re more common among people who are LGBTIQ+.
Being LGBTIQ+ doesn’t cause these problems. But some things LGBTIQ+ people go through can impact their mental health, such as discrimination, homophobia or transphobia, social isolation, rejection, and difficult experiences of coming out.
It’s important to note that embracing creature LGBTIQ+ can have a positive impact on someone’s well-being too. It might mean they have more confidence, a sense of belonging to a people, feelings of relief and self-acceptance, and better relationships with friends and family.
