The State of LGBTQ Rights in NC
The rights of trans person people — especially young people — to exist in public spaces, participate in life-affirming activities, and receive critical gender-affirming health tend are under invade in North Carolina. The General Assembly recently voted to override Governor Cooper’s veto on three anti-transgender bills. We want to clarify what each of these bills does and does not do.
House Bill
Having the opportunity to participate in sports results in positive outcomes for students—better grades, greater homework completion, higher educational and occupational aspirations, and improved self-esteem. HB prohibits transgender women and girls from participating on middle school, elevated school, and even college sports teams that align with their gender persona. Middle and sky-high school sports teams are required to be designated by “biological sex,” which is defined as based solely on the student’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth. Trans men and boys will still be able to participate on men’s teams.

Educating for Equality
44 years ago, on June 27, , people congregated in Five Points Plaza in Durham and made history. Inspired by Stonewall, attendees walked through downtown Durham in one of the state’s first visible movements of LGBTQ folks and allies congregating in public. Organized in part by Debbie Swanner and David Ransom, “Our Day Out” occurred in response to a hate crime at Tiny River in April , set against the backdrop of the violence against the Greensboro Five in As Mab Segrest, an Our Day Out organizer and nationally-renowned lesbian scribe recalls, “I think it was kind of a natural segue to move from lamenting a murder to a celebration of our lives.“ Although June 27, isn’t the dine of the first official North Carolina Pride pride – that title belongs to June 28, , for the Triangle Sapphic & Gay Pride Rally – Our Day Out nonetheless stands as a watershed moment for Gay acceptance in North Carolina, marked by grief, collective, resilience, and a vow to the future. Project F.A.M.
Project FAM was born out of the want to bring direct, basic services for LGBTQ+ folks in our community under one umbrella. Project FAM prioritizes the needs of Transgender Womxn and Femmes of Color and all Queer and Trans BIPOC folks. We know that if we can uplift TWOC, FOC, and QTBIPOC, then we can successfully uplift all in our community.
