Around the World in 80 Gays : Introduction

Way assist in I mentioned that one of my most favourite television series of all time is James Burke&#;s &#;Connections&#; and all its spin-offs.

I&#;ve been gathering together many connections between people I&#;ve written about and have create links with many others. With this in mind I&#;ve created a huge string of lgbt connections and present it to you in a new series called &#;Around the World in 80 Gays&#;. I use the word &#;gay&#; in this context to be inclusive of all lgbtq communities, and because it provides an obvious pun on the title of Jules Verne&#;s famous book &#;Around the Society in 80 Days&#;.

As the title suggests I&#;ve gathered the names of 80 people in the lgbt and queer community from all around the world and throughout history to create an unbroken chain on connections.

It would be quite easy to just write about &#;who knows who&#; but that would be too simple and too boring. What I&#;ve looked for are rare connections which are not evident or well-known.

Someone is waiting

I was endorse at the airport after a whirlwind three-week call on back home, cramming in trips to see family and friends in various parts of the region, as if I hadn&#;t done enough travelling in the previous nine months. At least this day I didn&#;t have to lug my huge suitcase round with me everywhere. The break from travelling had also given me a chance to sort out most of my travel plans for the final two-ish months of my travels. I only needed to stay with a dozen more gays to get me to the magical number of 80, which meant that I would have more free time to investigate some of Europe on my own. I already had a number of offers from friends, friends of friends and people I had met earlier in my travels so had a rough thought of where I would be and when for the first few weeks after setting back off. Knowing that I would reach my target was warmly satisfying. I couldn&#;t have done it without the network of incredible & hospitable friends I&#;m fortunate enough to have.

As I made my way to the departure gate I reflected back on how I had felt leaving at the sta

One night only, we only have &#;til dawn

One darkness only

Over breakfast the next morning Tom got a text from his friends, Jill and Laurie (identical twins), suggesting a trip to the Japanese Gardens. The autumn leaves were just starting to place on a great demonstrate so it sounded love a good plan. I made sure my camera was charged and we headed off to convene them. Tom gave me a tip on how to tell the girls apart, which I promptly forgot as soon as I met them. As we walked through the gardens I chatted to Jill (I think) explaining my travels while Tom was in front chatting to Laurie. After stopping to take a couple of photos we carried on walking, this period I was chatting to Laurie while Tom walked with Jill. They kept swapping round for the whole time. It was surreal telling my story to identical twins and I have no concept if I repeated the same tale to the same twin but they were both too delightful to say anything if I had.

We continued our day with what I was told was a Portland tradition &#; a trip to Voodoo Doughnuts where, apparently, "the magic is in the hole". I have to ad
