Adult LGBT Population in the United States

This report provides estimates of the number and percent of the U.S. individual population that identifies as LGBT, overall, as well as by age. Estimates of LGBT adults at the national, state, and regional levels are included. We rely on BRFSS data for these estimates. Pooling multiple years of data provides more stable estimates—particularly at the state level.

Combining BRFSS data, we estimate that % of U.S. adults identify as LGBT. Further, we estimate that there are almost million (13,,) LGBT adults in the U.S.

Regions and States

LGBT people reside in all regions of the U.S. (Table 2 and Figure 2). Consistent with the overall population in the United States,more LGBT adults live in the South than in any other region. More than half (%) of LGBT people in the U.S. inhabit in the Midwest (%) and South (%), including million in the Midwest and million in the South. About one-quarter (%) of LGBT adults reside in the West, approximately million people. Less than one in five (%) LGBT adults inhabit in the Northeast ( million).

Across the board, people in the South showed more discomfort with LGBT people than those in the U.S. overall. Many of the responses demonstrated discomfort levels at 5 to 6 points higher in the South than in the country as a whole.
40% of respondents in the South listed discomfort with attending a homosexual couple's wedding. It jumped to 50% discomfort when bringing a child to the same wedding.
Levels of discomfort concerning issues akin to transgender people were highest, both in the South and with the general U.S. population.

Atlanta has long held the nickname of the gay epicenter of the South, due to so many members of the LGBTQ+ collective from small towns in neighboring states moving to Atlanta to find their place among their kindred spirits. For decades, lgbtq+ people flocked to Midtown for weekend jaunts to some of the South’s most legendary bars, (Backstreet, anyone?) and Pride festivities, first in June to and later when the events were moved to October to coincide with “National Coming Out Day.” Midtown and Atlanta were synonymous with being lgbtq+, and though the people is more spread out over the metro area today, Midtown, with its iconic rainbow crosswalk, is still regarded as the center of gay Atlanta.
