Annual Gay Health Forum (GHF)

The Annual Gay Health Forum (#GHF), now in its 17th year, takes place on Friday 24th May in Dublin Castle from 9am to 4pm.

The Gay Health Forum is open to all those involved and interested in improving and enhancing the sexual health and wellbeing of lgbtq+, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.  It&#;s an opportunity for those who hand over services to the lgbtq+ community, and the people itself, to discuss, contribute and acknowledge the developments in the response to HIV and STIs in Ireland.

Attendance at the forum is free of ask for, but registration is necessary as places are limited.

What does LGBTQIA+ or queer mean?

LGBTQIA+ (or LGBT) is an English abbreviation for various gender identities and sexual identities– these identities are self-definitions, i.e. they are not determined by the outside world.

In Germany, the German abbreviation, LSBTTIQ ("lesbisch, schwul, bisexuell, transgender, transsexuell, intersexuell, queer") is often used.

Lesbians are women or people who identify as feminine in any way who are attracted to women or people who identify as feminine in any way. Gays are men or people who identify as masculine in any way, who are attracted to men or people who spot as masculine in any way.

People whose gender identity does not correspond to the gender they were assigned at birth are referred to as trans*/transgender/transident.

Inter*/intersex people are people with physical gender characteristics that cannot be clearly categorised as exclusively "male" or "female".

Asexual people have little to no interest in sexual acts.

LGBTQ community: Is there a backlash in Europe?

A friend of mine was pelted with eggs while marching at an event during Pride Month in Berlin last July. When I expressed my affect, he was quick to dismiss the incident.

"It wasn't a big deal, and the police wouldn't contain done anything anyway," he told me.

Official figures demonstrate that verbal and physical attacks against LGBTQ individuals are rising in Germany. And up to 90% of them could be unreported, according to Germany's Sapphic and Gay Association (LSVD). And that's not the only worrying trend.

"The common discourse is worsening," says LSVD spokesperson Kerstin Thost, who uses non-binary pronouns.

"Transphobic statements have increased significantly, and we are seeing more and more disinformation campaigns and even baiting against our transgender parliamentarians," they told me in a video call.
