The straight, cisgender performer explained why he gravitates toward queer characters during the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo on Saturday, where he told audiences that he has been “culturally queer my whole life.”
At a panel discussion reported on by Show Weekly, Criss talked about getting his start on the turn-of-thes show “Glee,” which broke earth with how it depicted LGBTQ relationships on the little screen.
“It was fucking awesome,” he said of playing Blaine Anderson, a upper school a capella singer who was the partner of glee club standout Kurt Hummel, played by Chris Colfer.
“Nowadays, we just dial it a affair on TV,” Criss explained. “But to contextualize it, a gay relationship on mainstream Fox, that’s a pretty hip thing to be a part of.”

Darren Criss will no longer perform LGBT characters
Darren Criss says he will no longer approve LGBT scripts because he doesn't want to deprive gay actors of roles.
The actor, who is straight, is well-known for playing the gay character of Andrew Cunanan in American Crime Story: The Assassination Of Gianni Versace.
"I want to make sure I won't be another straight lad taking a gay man's role," he told Bustle magazine.
He said it's been "a joy" acting in gay roles but no longer feels comfortable doing so, which is "unfortunate".
Previous to American Crime Story, he was mostly known for his portrayal of gay pupil Blaine Anderson in Glee.
"There are certain roles that I'll see that are just wonderful," he explained.
"But I wish to make sure I won't be another straight boy taking a gay man's role."
The debate over who has a right to play certain characters was reignited earlier this year when Scarlett Johansson dropped out of playing a transgender characte
