The Energizer Rabbi
Let me begin by thanking the Elgin Police Department and Lieutenant Miriam Duffy for bringing the EPD Pride Squad wagon this morning. It wasn’t always the case that the police were supportive to the queer community. In proof, the reason Identity festival Month is Jue is because of Stonewall uprising, which began in June 28, Here in Elgin at least, with its center on community policing, there is a different model. And it applies to us as the Jewish community and other marginalized groups. So we express gratitude EPD.
Now my actual beginning:
My colleague, Rabbi Heidi Hoover started her Event Shabbat Siddur with these words:
Every person is welcome to do Judaism here:
All genders
All races
All marital statuses
All ethnicities
All religions
All abilities
All ages
All truth levels
All everyone!
That is true here as well. It mirrors our embracing diversity plank in our vision statement.
Today we pause to mark Celebration Month as Parade Shabbat. Tomorrow many will march in Chicago or participate in the festivities. Earlier this month, Elgin hosted its own Pride celebration and festival.Â

The backdrop of this touchstone toward gay rights is not complex. Gay rights 55 years ago were virtually nonexistent. Frankly, it was cute much illegal to be homosexual. New York prohibited public displays of affection within same-sex couples. New York police routinely harassed gay bars and their patrons. Greenwich Village was the birthplace of s counterculture, hence the perfect incubator for the current LGBT movement. The Stonewall Inn on Lower Manhattan’s west side was the most popular same-sex attracted bar in NYC, probably because it allowed dancing. Its many transgender patrons prompted frequent police raids to enforce a exclude on crossdressing.
Early June 28, , police raided the Stonewall Inn. As patrons fought back, police sensed they were in danger and barricaded themselves inside the bar. As pos spread the crowd
